When I used to think about unschooling, I used to think how can anyone learn this way. Well after I had my daughter many things came to life for me. As my daughter became closer to school age I had to start thinking about her education. Knowing myself very well I started researching different kinds of learning. Averi (my now 7 year old) is a very bright and loving child. She loves to learn new things and enjoy it while doing so. When Averi was old enough to go to preschool we chose a private preschool program at a very well known day care. She thrived because her teachers were all about hands on and play learning. Seeing how well she did with this type of learning I started researching public schools in our area vs homeschooling activities. Long story short, we decided that I would homeschool her while working. What am I crazy? Right, I know thats what I was thinking! We started her kindergarten year traveling for my husbands job. We LOVED it! I didn't work during that time though so we were very stressed for the most part. That was not a happy time. Around Thanksgiving that year she asked to go to school! WHAT??!! Public school was scary to me. I didn't want her to be in a situation where I couldn't be there for her, but I had to let her try it. Kindergarten here she comes! We loved her teacher and I became comfortable with her going. We did have some hiccups along the way with other children and even some educators not being so nice but they were life lessons we were able to learn from. We were thankful for the end of the year!! Whew we made it even after the struggles of Averi and myself not wanting to get up as early as we had to since the school was a ways from our house. By the end of the school year we (Averi, Vince, and myself) discussed our other education options and came to the decision to homeschool again. I, however, had a full time job now. So I researched different homeschool options and found what I feel has been our best option, Florida Unschoolers! We LOVE LOVE LOVE Unschooling! I didn't know exactly what unschooling entailed but we have been signed up under this program since June 2019 and I have not stressed anything since.
Stay tuned.... Unschooling defined next.
